15 Elephants Found Dead in Amboseli as Cyanide Poisoning Probe Begins

AMBOSELI, Kenya, Aug. 2 — Kenyan wildlife authorities have launched investigations into the deaths of 15 elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem after preliminary findings linked the incident to suspected cyanide poisoning from tomatoes grown on nearby farms.

The deaths, recorded over several weeks between late June and late July, have alarmed conservationists and local communities, raising fresh concerns over the growing conflict between wildlife and farming activities in areas surrounding Amboseli National Park.

Officials from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said laboratory tests conducted on samples collected from several elephant carcasses detected traces of cyanide, a highly toxic chemical capable of killing large animals within a short period after ingestion.

Investigators believe the elephants may have consumed tomatoes contaminated with cyanide-based pesticides while feeding on farms bordering the protected wildlife area. However, authorities cautioned that investigations are still ongoing and that the exact source of the poison has not yet been confirmed.

One of the elephants examined during the investigation reportedly had dozens of tomatoes in its stomach, strengthening suspicions that contaminated crops could have been responsible for the deaths. Veterinary experts are continuing to analyze tissue samples, soil, water, and vegetation collected from the affected areas.

The elephants died in different locations within the Amboseli ecosystem, including Kimana Sanctuary and Kuku Group Ranch, where wildlife frequently crosses into agricultural land in search of food and water. Some animals reportedly showed signs of weakness and paralysis before collapsing, while others were discovered after they had already died.

KWS Director General Erustus Kanga described the incident as a serious conservation concern and said investigations would determine whether the poisoning resulted from accidental exposure to agricultural chemicals or deliberate misuse of toxic substances.

Authorities have urged farmers to follow approved guidelines when using pesticides and other agricultural chemicals, warning that hazardous substances can pose serious risks to wildlife, livestock and the environment.

The Kimana area is one of Kenya’s major tomato-producing regions. As farming activities continue to expand around wildlife habitats, elephants increasingly venture onto cultivated land, often damaging crops and triggering conflicts between farmers and conservation authorities.

Wildlife experts say the latest incident highlights the urgent need for stronger regulation of dangerous agricultural chemicals and improved measures to prevent wildlife from accessing cultivated farms. Conservation groups have also called for greater public awareness and closer cooperation between farmers, local communities and wildlife agencies to reduce future risks.

The Amboseli ecosystem is home to one of Africa’s best-known elephant populations and has earned international recognition for its successful conservation efforts over the past several decades. The deaths of 15 elephants represent a significant setback for those efforts and have renewed calls for enhanced protection of wildlife corridors and stricter monitoring of chemical use in farming.

Investigators are expected to release the final results of the inquiry once laboratory analysis is complete. The findings will help determine the exact cause of the deaths and guide future conservation and agricultural policies aimed at protecting both wildlife and local livelihoods.

For now, wildlife authorities continue to monitor the affected areas as conservationists hope no further elephant deaths will be reported.
