Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has resigned as chairman of the Senate Energy Committee, a move announced less than 24 hours after President William Ruto confirmed a formal political coalition between Kenya Kwanza and ODM ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Oburu announced his resignation on Tuesday during a meeting of the Senate Energy Committee, bringing to an end his tenure at the helm of the powerful parliamentary oversight panel.
The resignation comes at a politically significant moment, with President Ruto confirming that Kenya Kwanza and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have agreed to form a formal coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The proposed alliance is expected to be anchored by a joint political manifesto, bringing together the governing coalition and ODM in a new political arrangement that could reshape Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the next General Election.
Oburu, who is also ODM’s national party leader, did not directly link his resignation from the committee to the emerging political alliance. However, the timing has drawn attention, coming shortly after the announcement of the Kenya Kwanza-ODM agreement.
Speaking during the committee meeting, Oburu insisted that he had voluntarily stepped down and had not been pushed out of the position.
“The reasons why I am vacating are beyond my own self-control. I have resigned. Nobody should say that I have been removed,” he said.

He also played down any suggestion of a leadership dispute within the committee, describing the change as a peaceful transition.
“There is no coup here. There is only a peaceful transfer,” Oburu said.
Following his resignation, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang, who had served as Oburu’s deputy, was unanimously elected as the new chairperson of the Energy Committee. Nominated Senator Beatrice Ogolla was elected vice-chairperson.
Oburu will, however, remain a member of the committee and is expected to continue participating in its proceedings.
The change comes as ODM’s leadership takes on a potentially more prominent role in the emerging cooperation between President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration and the opposition party.

The formalisation of the Kenya Kwanza-ODM partnership, including plans for a joint manifesto, is likely to intensify political realignments ahead of 2027 as parties and individual leaders position themselves for the next electoral contest.
For Oburu, the resignation from the Senate committee leadership could allow greater focus on his responsibilities as ODM party leader at a time when the party is navigating a new political partnership with the government.
The Energy Committee remains responsible for scrutinising government policies and programmes in the energy sector, including electricity, petroleum and other matters affecting the country’s energy industry.
Oburu’s departure therefore represents more than a routine parliamentary leadership change, coming against the backdrop of one of the most significant political realignments ahead of Kenya’s 2027 elections.
