Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi, has resigned from office and announced his retirement from public service and active politics, bringing his tenure in the country’s top leadership to an end.

Nchimbi formally submitted his resignation to President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. According to the announcement, the resignation will officially take effect on September 4, 2026.

The decision was made in accordance with provisions of the Tanzanian Constitution, specifically Article 50(2)(c) and Article 149(2), which provide the constitutional framework governing the office of the Vice President and the appointment of a successor.

In his resignation, Nchimbi said he had formally communicated his decision to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, paving the way for the appointment of a new Vice President.

The announcement marks a significant development in Tanzania’s political leadership, as Nchimbi is also stepping away from active politics and public service altogether.

Nchimbi has held several senior positions in Tanzania’s government and political establishment during his career. His decision to retire therefore brings to a close a lengthy period of involvement in the country’s public affairs.

Tanzania’s Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi has resigned from office and announced his retirement from public service and active politics, effective September 4, 2026.

The Vice President’s resignation is expected to trigger the constitutional process for filling the vacant position. Under Tanzania’s constitutional framework, the President has the authority to appoint a new Vice President following the resignation of the incumbent.

Nchimbi’s departure will take effect on September 4, after which the country is expected to begin the transition to a new holder of the office.

The resignation comes as Tanzania continues to navigate its political and administrative affairs under President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Nchimbi’s decision to leave both government and active politics is consequently likely to attract considerable attention, particularly given the seniority of his position.

In announcing his retirement, Nchimbi indicated that his decision represents a complete withdrawal from active political engagement and public service, rather than a move to another government or political position.

His resignation therefore signals the end of a major chapter in his public career and opens the way for a new Vice President to assume the country’s second-highest constitutional office.

Further details regarding the appointment of Nchimbi’s successor and the formal transition are expected to emerge following the effective date of his resignation.
